As a parent, would you let your 10 year old child accompany and supervise your younger 6 year old child in the park? Nope, you won’t be accompanying them. They will be pretty much alone on their own. No adult supervision. No adult to watch over them. They will be free to stay in the park and walk home all by themselves. Would you allow them to go out on their own?

Apparently, there are parents who would, according to an interesting article on Upworthy.com. In fact, these parents have gotten into trouble with child protective services and are close to losing their kids as a result of giving them too much freedom.

When Danielle and Alexander Meitiv, parents in Silver Spring, Maryland, first let their 10-year-old walk their 6-year-old home from a park, they got a warning from child protective services and were forced to sign an agreement not to leave the children unattended anymore. It was that or lose the kids …

The Meitivs are part of the Free-Range Kids Movement, a movement which professes to raise safe, self-reliant children. According to the site, free-range kid is a “commonsense approach to parenting in these overprotective times.” A free-range kid “is a kid who gets treated as a smart, young, capable individual, not an invalid who needs constant attention and help.”

Recently, the Meitiv’s kids were found alone in a park and the kids were taken into protective custody again.

The Meitivs were accused of neglect and warned that protective services would file charges and send the children into foster homes unless the parents made a legal commitment to a safety plan.

This time, protective services really put their foot down.
